A new Duology that features the Occult and magic!
Death Fucks us all.
genre: fantasy
Ranking: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Leigh Bardugo has just introduced us to a new duology that features new magic and even some occult (witch) magic.
Leigh Bardugo is the author that introduced to the beloved Shadow and Bone Trilogy that just recently brought the series to Netflix. There are only two season of the show out on Netflix. Netflix just recently cancelled the series (and I am highly annoyed that happened).
Anyways, let’s move on to my personal thoughts on Ninth House. This book interested me from whenever I first saw it at Barnes and Noble. I have read the first book of the Shadow and Bone trilogy so I thought to myself I might as well give this one a try.
I have enjoyed Leigh’s writing so this novel was even better than the Shadow and Bone series. This duology was the first adult series that Leigh has written. Shadow and Bone is considering a young adult series but I think anyone can read that series.
Our main character, Alex, has gone through a lot of shit in her life to become what she is now. She’s a high school dropout without much of a family. After she dropped out, she succumbed to a life of druggie boyfriends, and much more worse.
She was offered a full ride to Yale University in New Haven, CT. Why? You must ask? Alex was the sole survivor to a multiple homicide. In my honest opinion, I would be mentally messed up if I undergone the same things she went through. Alex was mainly brought to Yale to look after its “secret” societies and their occult magic. I believe she is only brought to Yale because she sees Greys (ghosts). Most of these societies like to dabble in the occult along with forbidden magic that like to mess with dead people (and also, the living).
I would love to tell you what else happened throughout this introduction of Alex and the rest of the cast of this book but I don’t want to spoil anything. Towards the end of this book, however, Alex has turned into a certified badass. Her character development throughout this book was huge. She just seemed to grow more in her personality.
After I finished this book, I had to do more research about these “societies” at Yale University. I thought that they would be just made up for the story in itself. I found out they are not and they are very much a real thing at Yale. From what I read online, Yale has 3 big societies that mainly deal with conspiracy theories and the like. I find this all completely fascinating and I will most likely do some more research myself.
As someone who is into learning about magic and witchcraft, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. If you want to know more about Alex and her life at Yale, I highly suggest you reading this novel!
Happy Reading!!
