Emily Henry’s latest romance novel, “Funny Story,” brings all the joy (and heartbreak) in what a contemporary romance novel needs. This book brought me much joy (along with heartbreak). Have you ever wondered what would happen if your fiancé dropped everything to get together with HIS female best friend?? Well, wonder no more because this book brought this craziness aboard.
Our main girl in this story, Daphne, had one of those fears come true. Her fiancé, Peter, told her that the whole relationship is out of the window so he can marry his FEMALE best friend, Petra. I find it funny that he wants to marry his female name sake counterpart. What’s even more funny is that Petra’s ex-boyfriend is named Miles. Daphne is now living with Miles to help split rent costs. Daphne used to live with Peter. She thought she would have the house of the dreams til Peter pulled that crap with her.
This book also tells a lot about the family dysfunctions that Daphne and Miles encounter. Both Daphne’s and Miles fathers left them both early in life. Daphne’s father just decided to leave both her and her mother one day. Her father just shows up unannounced which leaves Daphne confused.
Long story short, Petra and Peter break up in the end because they find out they aren’t compatible together. Peter wants to get back together with Daphne but she was not having any of it. Daphne and Miles fall in love with each other.
I don’t want to completely spoil this novel. If you are into simply told stories about love (and the complicated drama from it), I highly suggest that you read this novel along with Emily Henry’s other novels. I also suggest that you can check out novels from Christina Lauren and Ali Hazelwood. They are two of my top favorite contemporary romance authors.
This was a well paced book that made me love Emily Henry much more as an author. She has also written Happy Place, Book Lovers, Beach Read, and People We Meet on Vacation. Besides her latest novel, I have only read Happy Place and Book Lovers. Her novels are fun to read and are at a well-paced speed.
